After the rebellion of 1857, every attempt at revolt, whether small or large was immediately subdued by the British. The freedom movement was all but extinct because no one dared to raise his head. These were times during which most of India had accepted that the British would rule for another 100 years. The Rajah had lost most of his legendary power and wealth and were now simple rulers in name only. In some cases mere tax collectors on behalf of the British. The British, after adopting a dual policy, protected the territories of the Rajah and administered law and order. In exchange, they collected a tax to be paid by all farmers in the country. The presentation to the collectors of a portion of the crop farmers in the form of tax is known by the name of Lagaan.
